The Royal Netherlands Society of Engineers (KIVI) installed Aad van der Horst, Advisor of BAM Infraconsult, on June 30, 2021 as a Fellow Chartered Engineer. Awarding of the Fellowship status is an acknowledgment of the leadership and professional performance of Prof. ir. Aad van der Horst, including his significant contributions to the Chartership structure in the Netherlands.

Prof. ir. Aad van der Horst is originally a civil engineer and studied at the TU Delft. In 2016, he received the Royal Decoration, Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau, upon his retirement as Statutory Director of BAM Infraconsult (where he has since been active part-time as Technical Advisor). In 2017 he received the Medal of Merit from FIB, (International Federation for Structural Concrete), for his contributions to both committees and publications of FIB. He has been a part-time professor (now emeritus) in Construction Technology of Civil Engineering Structures at TU Delft since 2006 and has over 45 years of work experience as a Project Leader and Lead Engineer all over the world and has dozens of publications to his name. He was involved in a large number of leading infrastructure projects, such as the Oosterscheldekering in the Netherlands, the Maasvlakte 2, the Waal bridge near Nijmegen, the bridge over the Hartel Canal, the HSL immersion tunnels and the Botlek rail tunnel. Together with colleagues, he also expanded BAM Infraconsult from 70 employees into an internationally renowned office of 400 employees with offices in Panama, Dubai, Jakarta, Singapore and Perth. His work has been of great importance to the construction industry and Royal BAM Group. He also taught at the UNESCO Institute of Hydraulic Engineering for young engineers from developing countries and held various (voluntary) positions, whether or not related to his work. All his activities, both professional and social, benefit society. As an engineer and professor, he has managed to connect social and academic values, and has built a bridge between science and practice. He is also an active member of a dozen associations, including KIVI, and international committees.
Aad van der Horst became Chartered Engineer at KIVI in 2018. Since then he has been committed to Chartered and Incorporated Engineering in the Netherlands and lifelong learning. Because of his exemplary role for engineers in business and education and his driving role in Chartered and Incorporated Engineering, KIVI awards him the honorary title of Fellow Chartered Engineer (FCEng).
Chartership Status
The underlying purpose of the Chartership is constantly stimulating the professional development of engineers, stimulating innovation, securing of knowledge in the discipline, and ensuring social dialogue and responsible actions of the engineer. The Chartership contributes to the development of engineering science and distinguishes engineers who contribute to the engineering profession. The titles are Chartered Engineer (MSc level) and Incorporated Engineer (BSc level). These titles are internationally recognized qualifications for engineers with appropriate professional experience.
It offers a structure for knowledge exchange and continual professional development across multiple engineering workfields and disciplines. Key elements are reflective learning, peer review and a strong focus on the continuous professional development of the engineers knowledge, experience and commitment. Chartership is an internationally recognised qualification for Engineers as a Chartered Engineer or an Incorporated Engineer.
